Botanical name: 

CALLICARPA AMERICANA, L. Sowerbush. Virginia to Florida. Ornamental shrub, the purple berries die wool purple with alum; they are edible, acid, sweetish and subastringent. Leaves useful for dropsies in decoction, according to Dale, Miller, Schoepf, and Elliott.
