The tincture of Benzoin is a preservative to keep the oils from becoming rancid. I don't use it because I don't like the smell. As an alternative, use vitamin E.

500 IU's per cup oil should do it.

It's not enough to really add the medicinal skin effects of vit. E, but your salve will stay good. Also good for herb infused oils.

A little [tincture of benzoin] added to creams not only helps preserve but also gives a nice, slightly sticky texture. It is a good base note for scents and 'holds' the scent of essential oils, without overriding them. So, try benzoin and a few drops of your favouite essential oils to give a solid, well rounded scent to your preparations.

If you can get benzoin resinoids, so much the better.
