Synonym.—Pharbitisin.
Kaladana resin is prepared from kaladana by a process identical with that employed for the extraction of jalap resin from jalap. It occurs in brownish, brittle, opaque fragments, with translucent edges, or as a grey powder, with a sweetish odour and acrid taste. Melting-point, 160°.
Soluble in alcohol; insoluble in ether, benzol, chloroform, or carbon bisulphide, and almost or entirely insoluble in warm water.
Action and Uses.—Kaladana resin is official in India and the Eastern Colonies, where it is used as a substitute for jalap resin, which it closely resembles in its action.
Dose.—1 to 5 decigrams (2 to 8 grains).
