Spray solutions are intended for the application of medicaments in solution to the throat and nose by means of a spray producer, atomiser, or nebuliser. The solutions may be aqueous, oily, glycerinated, or alcoholic, and the spray coarse or fine. The selection of apparatuses suitable for their application depends upon the density of the solution to be sprayed, and the position of the surface to be covered by the atomised solutions. Spray solutions prepared with vehicles, such as alcohol, distilled water, distilled water with 25 per cent. of glycerin, ether, or tincture of benzoin can be atomised in most forms of spray producer. For the atomisation of spray solutions prepared with liquid paraffin or vehicles of similar density, better results are obtained by the use of an apparatus in which the capacity of the rubber bellows and its response to pressure are considerably greater than is usually employed for the nebulisation of less dense solutions. Liquid paraffin of light density should be selected for the preparation of spray solutions.
