Ajuga.

Ajuga.—Of this genus A. chamaepitys (L.), or Ground Pine; A. reptans, L., Mountain Bugle, or Common Bugle; and A. pyramidalis, L., all of them European species, the last naturalized in America, have been used in medicine, and are probably mild astringents and tonics. The ground pine is said to contain a volatile oil, and has been used to some extent in amenorrhea and in various forms of rheumatism, in doses of from one to two drachms (3.9-7.7 Gm.). Ajuga Iva, L., of Sardinia, is said to be a depressomotor, an active bactericide, and an antiperiodic. (A. J. B., xxxiv.)
