A good herb for hot flashes is dong quai. I have been having them lately and see the dong quai to be very beneficial. The black cohosh is good also. I also use the nettle for the purpose of keeping calcium intake up.

I'm kind of new to this list too (just today started responding). Motherwort is wonderful for helping with hot flashes (they're power surges!) and with other menopausal symptoms. Another one that works really well is Chaste Tree berries (vitex). Tinctures are the best way to use these - infusions and teas from these herbs are REALLY bitter.
An excellent herb book is Rodale's Encyclopedia of Herbs. Another wonderful book that addressed both topics is Susun Weed's "Menopausal Years". I highly recommend them both.
Hope this helps,
